many factors affect user-agent string, including oem vendors, carriers, network administrators, , user preferences.

additional tokens can added user-agent string using registry editor create new string values under pre-platform key or post-platform key. value name should complete token; value data ignored. tokens added pre-platform key appear before platform token in final user-agent string. tokens added post-platform key appear after platform token in final user-agent string. multiple tokens in either pre-platform key or post-platform key displayed in unpredictable order.

earlier versions of internet explorer included feature tokens defined using pre-platform , post-platform keys part of user-agent string during http negotiation process. on time, lead overly long user-agent strings, in turn created problems web servers. problems appeared when user-agent strings longer 256 characters. of internet explorer 9, user-agent string no longer includes feature tokens during http negotiation. feature tokens included in value returned useragent property of navigator object. applications rely on earlier behavior should modified accordingly.
